WEBQUEST 2

First, look up the meaning of “carbon footprint.” Find it at https://timeforchange.org/what-is-a-carbon-footprint-definition

  1. Fill in the definition here:

The total amount of greenhouse gases  produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

2. Provide some examples (from the same website):

Amount of CO2 emitted by burning one liter of gasoline: 2,3 kg of CO2

Driving a car for 6 km:   1,0074 kg of CO2   (7.3 litres petrol per 100km)

Creating 5 plastic bags:  1 Kg of CO2

Producing a cheeseburger: 3,1 kg of CO2

Go to Youtube and watch “Plants and animals can adapt to climate change, right?” so that you can answer these questions.

4.            When was the last time the Earth warmed up so fast?

//:Whe have to go back millions of years to what´s called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal  Maximum wich happened about 55 million years ago.

5.            What is the name of the current extinction event?

//:The name for this massive die-off is the Anthropocene Extinction.

6.            What will probably happen by 2050?

//:The 90 percent of coral reefs, the nurseries of the sea, could be gone by 2050

7.            About what proportion of mammal species could disappear by 2100?

//:By the end of the century 1/5 of mammal species could disappear.

8.            Which type of plant would probably grow faster with more CO2, weeds or crops?

//:Warmer conditions and higher carbon dioxide levels cause weeds to grow faster, up to three times faster than crops.

9.            How many dollars has climate change cost us in wheat and maize losses per year since 1980?

//:It is estimated that since 1980 climate change has already cost us 5 billion dolars a year on average in wheat and maize losses, much of ocurring in poor conuntries where any change in food availability bites deep.

10. According to a UN report, about how long do we have until climate change is irreversible?

//: According to the new UN report we have just over a decade, at most until 2030 to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere or it maybe too late to reverse the worst effects.

11. Give an example of negative changes we’re already seeing.

//:We are already seeing storms, sea level rise and flooding, in the Philippines and on the east coast of the U.S. Other consequences, crop failures and massive population displacement may also reach crisis levels in the next 20 years.

12. What would be the cost of ending the use of fossil fuels?

//:The cost is estimated at $54 trillion. This would be cheaper, they say, than dealing with the worst effects of climate change.
